The Uterus and Trauma?

Good morning, afternoon, or evening to the reader, welcome back to Trauma informed life coaching, where we discuss trauma and have real conversations, I understand that this is, the beginning of you starting your journey of healing and I am so excited for you. Today we are learning about the history of trauma, can you believe that trauma has been a serious topic sense the late 19th century. Jean Martin Charcot a French physician investigated the relationship between trauma and mental illness, he was a neurologist ( a person who studied brain damaged patients) , his study focus was on HYSTERIA, a mental health disorder mainly seen in woman, who have experienced trauma, the symptoms were characterized by paralysis, amnesia, sensory loss and convulsions, unfortunately, the cure for hysteria was a total hysterectomy because professionals believed that a woman’s uterus was to blame for hysteria, Thankfully Charcot was the first ever person to disagree that the experience was not physiological but instead psychological, he made it a point to understand the behaviors of women who experienced trauma. Imagine if medical professional, never took the time to understand trauma, and how it effects woman, we know that men go through trauma as well, but the fact that, professionals really believed that the uterus was to blame for the symptoms of trauma is beyond crazy. Trauma is more common in women than it is men, unfortunately, five out of ten women have experienced childhood trauma/ or trauma later in life. Woman, are also more than likely to be sexually assaulted, neglected, or physically abused, in either childhood or later in life. I would love for us to understand the history of trauma more, and of course if you would love to share your story, please feel free to email me: Traumainformedlifecoach@gmail.com
